We have to admit that the cool label and name caught our attention. However, Magic Hat’s Heart of Darkness Stout did not deliver what we had anticipated by the South Burlington, VT brewery which otherwise puts out a good line of beers. This stout pours nice deep dark brown, almost close to black and light caramel colored head. The aroma starts off with a significant amount of malts that have provide an ample amount of medium sweetness and chocolate aroma. For a stout though, Heart of Darkness was much lighter in substance and taste than what we expected and more sweet than bitter. A light smoky flavor, roasted malt chocolate and a light coffee flavor is delivered up front – and that’s a good thing. There is a light nutty taste toward the end. But somewhere along the line the beer comes up short leaving very little to remember. This is not to say the Heart of Darkness Stout is unpleasant, but it fairs as an average stout with a 5.70% ABV (booze).
Heart of Darkness is sold in 12oz bottles, six-packs, & draft.
