Fellas, how many times have you been out having a great fishing day and nature calls. In an effort to not miss any of the action you rush off to relieve yourself and quickly unzip and zip back up? If not careful this simple act can cost you a trip to the emergency room.
An estimated 17,616 guys wound up in U.S. emergency rooms between 2002 and 2012 because they caught their genitals, primarily their penises, stuck in their zippers. This is according to a study published this year in the British Journal of Urology International by a University of California San Francisco urology resident.
At some point in our lives this has happened and no one needs to tell you how excruciating the pain is not to mention the pure feeling of anxiety and horror if you really get snagged.
According to the study zipper injuries are rated as the most common cause of penile injury in adult men and reported hospital emergency rooms visits. On a brighter note, permanent damage is rare however surgical intervention has been necessary. With a high bacteria rate in the genital area, the potential for infection to your wounded fishing buddy is also a potential problem.
If this happens, medical specialists advise slowly backing the zipper down, giving it a slight wiggle. Do not, and we repeat, do not try to use brute force and yank the zipper down. And if a trip to the emergency room is warranted just remember thousands of others have gone through this experience. In some cases, medical experts suggest the use of mineral oil poured over the genitalia and left to sit for several minutes which can allow the member to become dislodged from the zipper.
So stay safe out there and slow down and pay attention to what you are doing. We promise that the next big catch is not worth what could be the most painful catch of the day!
