Here’s a little story I would like to share with you from one of the Custom Bait Co. Fishing Team members, Darrell Henson Jr. I truly believe that this story will not only change the way you think, but if you let it, the way you live. I have always believed that fishing can change your life, and here is a great example.
“Are You The Fisher Guy?” – We Are All Made of Stars
I had been going through some tough times recently, and dealing with all sorts of issues and it really takes a toll on you mentally and physically. However, a moment like what I’m about to share with you is one that I will truly remember until they lay me 6 feet under.
I was in Wal-Mart, picking up a few items I needed in the fishing section, as I always do. I was down on one knee looking at some baits and suddenly out of nowhere this little kid runs up to me at full speed and stops – not even a foot away from me. A huge smile covered his face.
I said “hey bud, you need something?” Because I was somewhat creeped out. I mean it’s not every day you have kids running up to you like this, (lol). He says, “Are you that fisher guy? The one I see all the time?” Being on one knee, I looked at him, almost eye level, and said, “Sorry bud, I ain’t nothing special, but I do fish a little.” He laughs, smiles, and says, “You’re that guy! I’ve seen that fish thing on your shirt!!” And all over a sudden, he bolts off running from where he came from down the aisle and comes back with his dad holding his hand. At this point, I was kind of scared because his dad was huge, (lol).
“One day when I grow up, I want to be like you and I want to come fishing with you one time so we can fish together”
His dad came and talked to me and explained everything to me, saying that he and his son followed me at some of my tournaments, saw me in the newspapers and they even fished against me at a few of the smaller tournaments. The little guy was still clutching his dad’s hand and his dad whispered something in his
ear and then he stepped up to me and said “Mister, can I have your autograph?” At this point I’m completely stunned, just sitting here looking at this kid. I’m thinking – who would want an autograph from me? I ain’t nothing special. But you can’t refuse a kid as cute as that little dude.
I said “well bud, you got a sharpie?” He whips out a black sharpie right out of his pocket then he turns around wanting me to sign my name on the back of his white t-shirt. While I’m signing my name he said something that completely touched my heart, “One day when I grow up, I want to be like you and I want to come fishing with you one time so we can fish together” I was just blown away and I had butterflies knowing that this kid, he wasn’t more than 4- or 5-years-old, looked up to me? Me? Out of all people? I ain’t nothing special by any means but this kid thought I was amazing, thought I was special, like a celebrity or something.
So I signed my name and he turned around and gave me a big ole’ hug and said “thank you!!!” His dad and I talked for a little while longer, we exchanged phone numbers, and now we are planning a fishing trip.
As I got back to the house, I sat on the front deck of my boat and just thought about it. So whenever you think you can’t push anymore through a situation, whenever you are about to give up your fight, remember, somewhere out there, you always have someone pulling for you. And for me, this little kid truly touched my heart, more than anyone has in my entire life. It gave me the push to get pushing, to keep grinding it out. I’ll never be the same after that moment. This has truly has changed my entire aspect on fishing and more importantly life itself.
Little did Darrell and the boy know that the experience would change their lives, and it should change the lives of any fisherman in the world that reads this. I’m glad to have this young man on my team. I’m proud of him and happy that at his young age, he represents what this sport is all about! He represents what our team stands for, no matter who you are. You are just as important as Ike, KVD and the rest of them, to someone. Take a kid fishing, they will never forget it. Not only will it change their life, it may change yours as well! Remember the way you represent yourself and the companies you fish for should make you feel good, and it may even earn you an autograph someday.
