Hawaii-based Dakine Lures offers an array of beautiful handmade multi-purpose lures designed to be jigged, popped, darted and skipped across the water. Constructed of basic clear casting resin, these plugs are small yet heavy so they can be casted far even on a short rod, but sink easily. We tried various techniques to get the best results. Initially working to pop the lure on the surface took a few tries, but once you got use to the timing of the retrieve, the lure proved very effective. The best method that got us some good catches including a nice three-pound largemouth was a medium retrieve just below the surface and a few quick jerks to create a top water solid “bloop”.
Designed for both salt and freshwater fishing, these custom lures are super durable. Dakine Lures’ freshwater version has an insert with microballoons, rattle pod and covered with reflective material, the top(hat) part of the lure has microballons that keeps it upright all the time and the bottom half has no microballons. The plug we reviewed weighed in at about 3/4oz. A wire runs through the body feeding out the back to a very strong treble. This versatile lure is great to have in the box for those times that may require an all together different presentation.
